![Made bed on a pale wall — the object a checkout currency line is written for](/blog/covers/currency-switcher-vs-card-fx.webp)

A storefront currency switcher is merchandising. The card bill is a second number: issuer foreign-exchange and any cash-advance or conversion fee. Believe the checkout total on the locale you will pay, then read the issuer disclosure. This note sits on the [dtc tag](/t/dtc). We will not invent an exchange rate or recommend a card. Pair [how to estimate landed cost](/blog/landed-cost-brand-storefronts) with [how to verify a storefront ships to your country](/blog/verify-store-ships-to-your-country). [Away](/s/away) and [Brooklinen](/s/brooklinen) still publish prices on their official host.

## What is the switcher showing?

A header control that flips USD, EUR, or GBP is a display. It may update tiles. It may not be the settlement currency. Some themes convert for browsing and still charge the store’s home currency at pay.

Treat the switcher as a preview. The live figure is the checkout line after you choose a locale and an address. A banner that says “prices in your currency” is copy until that line exists.

## What does the card add?

Your issuer can convert the checkout currency into the card currency. That rate and any fee live on the issuer’s disclosure, not on the brand site. Dynamic currency conversion at a terminal or checkout is a third object: the processor offers to bill in your home currency, often at a worse rate.

We will not invent a percentage. Open the card’s FX page the day you pay. Do not treat a Google tab as the bill.

## How do you choose a number without a rate table?

| Number | Where it lives | What it is |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Tile after the switcher | The storefront | Merchandising |
| Checkout total | The locale you will pay | The live store price |
| Card statement | The issuer | FX and fees after the store |

If those three disagree, believe checkout for the store, then the issuer for the conversion. This is not a Best of cards list.

## Who is this for (and who is it not)?

You are in the right place if you shop a brand storefront from another country and you want to know which number is the price. You are in the wrong place if you wanted a duty calculator — that is landed cost — or a card recommendation.

StoreAtlas will not invent a rate. Confirm checkout and the issuer the day you pay.

## Questions

**Is the currency switcher the price I will pay?** No. It is a preview. The live store price is the checkout total on the locale you will pay.

**Who sets the card conversion?** Your issuer, unless you accepted dynamic currency conversion at pay. Read that disclosure. We do not invent a rate.

**Does StoreAtlas recommend a card?** No. We do not publish a Best of cards list or a score.
