Public list pages have described a shift in the cost of parcels moving between the United Kingdom and the European Union after a customs change, including dearer postage on some EU-origin orders. Read that as a buyer prompt before Black Friday direct mail, not as a number you can paste onto your cart. StoreAtlas stays on the shopping side: identify the merchant in the [store directory](/), compare what you can actually pay in [deals](/deals), and add the lines you can see — merchandise, postage, and any tax or handling the checkout shows — before you decide the sticker won.

This note does not invent a percentage increase, a duty amount, a coupon rate, or a count of transit days. Shops change carriers and change which charges appear before payment. The only total that binds the order is the total on the review step you accept. If a line is missing, the landed price is not known yet.

Neighbor reading stays practical. The [returns and ship-to guides](/topics/returns-ship-to-guides) cover delivery questions after an order exists. The [blog](/blog) holds other seasonal notes. A store card on [/s](/s) helps you see whether a shop ships inside the destination country or only from across the Channel. None of these pages freeze a customs rule.

## Landed price is the lines you can see

A low item price with postage "calculated later" is not a Black Friday deal. Build the landed view from lines the checkout actually prints.

1. Merchandise total after any markdown the review step accepted. If a code raises the merchandise line, compare both totals and keep the lower one you can see. Do not stack a second code unless the page shows both accepted.
2. Postage that remains. A campaign badge can fail at the review step because of destination, basket size, or category. If the postage line is not what the badge implied, believe the line.
3. Any tax, duty, or handling line the shop shows before you pay. Some checkouts collect it. Some say the recipient may be asked to pay a carrier or a customs charge on delivery. Those are different offers. Read which one this page claims.
4. The return cost, stated or unknown. A prepaid label, a buyer-paid label, or a deduction the policy prints. If the policy is silent, mark the return as unknown. Do not guess a fee to make the comparison look finished.

Write the four answers next to the shop name. A social recap of a postage jump is not a line on your order.

## UK-bound parcels and EU-bound parcels

The same brand can sell to a UK address and to an EU address with different warehouses and different checkout lines. Check the direction you are actually using.

When the parcel enters the UK from the EU, or enters the EU from the UK, look for three facts. Who is the merchant on the payment sheet. Which country the listing says it ships from. Whether the review step shows a charge now or warns that a charge may appear at delivery. A site in your language can still ship from the other side of the Channel.

Shoppers in France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and elsewhere often send gifts the other way, into the UK, or receive gifts from a UK shop. The method is the same. Do not borrow a neighbor's campaign. A postage badge on a German page does not apply to a French checkout, and a French badge does not apply to a UK address until that checkout says so.

If the page says the recipient may have to pay on delivery, decide now whether that is acceptable for a gift. The surprise belongs on the review step, not at the door on a holiday weekend. This note does not set the amount. It only says an unstated amount is a reason to pause.

## A shop that already ships inside the destination

Before you accept a cross-Channel lane for a dated gift, compare one merchant that dispatches inside the destination country. Use the [store directory](/) to find the shop, and [deals](/deals) only for offers you can open.

A domestic dispatch does not make the item cheaper by itself. It removes one class of unknown: the border charge you could not see. Read that shop's postage, its return address, and who pays the label. A higher merchandise price with a named domestic return can be the calmer gift. A lower cross-border total is rational when the review step shows merchandise, postage, and any tax line, and the return path names an address and a payer.

Reject the offer when the ship-from country changes between the product page and the review step, or when the shop will not name a carrier. "Standard shipping" is not a carrier. Holiday slogans about arrival are not a lane.

## Marketplace listing versus brand domain

The same product can appear on a marketplace and on the brand's own site. The ship-from country can differ. The postage line can differ. The returns address can differ again.

On a marketplace, open the seller block. Note the legal name and the dispatch country. Then open the review step and see if those lines survived. A seller with a UK dispatch and a seller shipping the same photo from the EU are different offers, even when both wear a sale badge.

On a brand domain, read the footer and the shipping page for the country you selected. A country switcher can change currency and still leave the warehouse abroad. Believe the warehouse line. If postage appears only after an account exists, you can still stop before payment. An account screen is not consent to buy.

## What to ask when a line is missing

Send short questions in writing and keep the replies.

- Which country does this parcel ship from to this address?
- Does this checkout collect tax or handling now, or might the recipient be asked to pay on delivery?
- Who pays return postage, and in which country is the return address?
- Can you cancel before dispatch if the lane is not the one named here?

If the replies conflict with the review step, do not pay. If the shop cannot answer, choose another merchant in the [store directory](/). A sale price does not fill a blank line.

## A method you can repeat

1. Set the delivery country on the shop before you read any badge.
2. Capture merchandise, postage, and any tax or handling line from the review step.
3. Read ship-from and the return path. Mark unknown lines as unknown.
4. Price one in-country alternative the same way.
5. Pay on the checkout whose landed lines and return path you can both point to. If neither is clear, wait. Badges refresh often.
6. Save the review screen with the postage line visible.

## If the parcel is already on the way

Some readers will meet the extra charge after they have paid. The buyer moves are ordinary.

- Match the carrier on the tracking page to the carrier you were shown. If they differ, write to the shop.
- Do not pay a surprise courier amount you cannot tie to the checkout text without asking the shop first. Keep the notice.
- Ask whether the shop can hold or cancel if the parcel has not been handed to the carrier. Policies differ. The written answer is the one you can use.
- If a gift is time-sensitive and tracking has not moved, tell the recipient early.
- For the next order, start again at the landed lines. One dearer lane is not a permanent fact about every shop that ships across the Channel.

Black Friday crowds cross-border parcels. Crowding is a reason to choose a named ship-from country and a visible total, not a reason to guess that every parcel will be stopped.

This comparison is a buyer task. It is not a customs handbook and not a stocking guide. Nothing here tells a seller how to replenish a warehouse.

## Questions

The questions under this note cover landed totals, delivery-time charges, in-country alternatives, and gifts.
