Béis vs Away is a features-versus-trial decision on hard-shell carry-ons. Béis builds polycarbonate rollers with a built-in weight indicator, a bag hook, and an expansion gusset; The Carry-On Roller in Black on beistravel.com lists at $268, 15.70 × 22.83 × 10 inches, 7.81 lb, and 49 L expanding to 61 L. Away builds a tighter polycarbonate shell with an interior compression pad and a longer unused-return window; The Carry-On in Olive Green on awaytravel.com lists at $275, 22 × 14.4 × 9.1 inches including handles and wheels, 7.5 lb, and 41 L. Choose Béis when you want the hook, the scale in the handle, and a matching weekender. Choose Away when you want the smaller international-leaning outline, free returns for 100 days on unused luggage, and a repair program that names airline mishandling. StoreAtlas files both as stores on the outdoor hub and the travel tag. This note is not a Best of ranking.
Away vs Monos, July vs Monos, and CALPAK vs Béis are the other hard-shell comparisons. Peak Design vs Away is the backpack detour. This note stays on the two roller storefronts and the bags they sell beside the suitcase.
Both rooms sit on the camera travel carry job page with Peak Design and neighbors already in the directory. Those are other files, not a ranking. The same files also live in the store directory and on the jobs index.
Who each storefront fits
Béis fits the traveler who wants the suitcase to do extra jobs. The black Carry-On Roller lists 15.70 × 22.83 × 10 inches, 7.81 lb, 49 L expanding to 61 L, in polycarbonate with polyester and PU trim, at $268, with a TSA lock and about 2 inches of expansion. The beige page still prints 22.8 × 15.7 × 9.8 inches and 8.36 lb for the same name and price. Read the colorway in the cart.
The Small Carry-On Roller is the tighter overhead at $248: 13.50 × 21.50 × 8.07 inches, 7.15 lb, 31 L, in polycarbonate with polyester and PU trim. Béis calls it the size for the smallest overhead bins. The Medium Check-In, the 26-inch, is $338: 17.67 × 28.19 × 10.98 inches, 9.90 lb, 78 L expanding to 94 L. The Large Check-In, the 29-inch, is $368: 19.69 × 30.98 × 12.48 inches, 11.33 lb, 111 L expanding to 132 L. Those rollers share a redesigned bag hook rated to 30 lb, a hidden AirTag pocket, and a weight indicator the brand tells you to use before the airline does. The classic carry-on copy has described that indicator around a 50 lb mark. Treat the indicator as a warning light, and the warranty only covers indicator failures for 30 days after purchase.
The soft bags are the set. The Weekender is $118, 17.91 × 15.75 × 9.84 inches, 3.68 lb, 42 L, recycled and virgin polyester with nylon webbing, and a padded pocket for up to a 16-inch laptop. The Mini Weekender is $108, 16.14 × 15.75 × 7.87 inches, 3.11 lb, 32 L, with the same 16-inch pocket. Both have a trolley pass-through. The Hybrid Carry-On Roller is $298, 8.39 lb, 35 L expanding to 41 L, with 2 inches of expansion, a 100% virgin polycarbonate shell, aluminum corner guards, and a bag hook rated to 50 lb that also folds into a phone stand. Béis says it is smaller than the original carry-on and built to meet airline size requirements, and that the published dimensions include the wheels. A coupling system links Hybrid rollers so they roll as one unit.
Away’s Carry-On is 100% polycarbonate with a two-stage trolley, a TSA lock, a compression pad, mesh pockets, a recycled-polyester laundry bag, and a luggage tag in 50% recycled leather. Exterior 22 × 14.4 × 9.1 inches, interior 20.1 × 13.9 × 7.5 inches, 7.5 lb, 41 L, $275. Away says it fits most major overhead bins, holds about 5–7 outfits, and nests inside the larger cases.
The Bigger Carry-On lists at $295: exterior 22.7 × 15.4 × 9.6 inches, interior 20.9 × 15 × 7.9 inches, 7.9 lb, and 49 L, measurements including wheels. Away says it fits most major U.S. overhead bins and packs about 6–9 outfits for 4–7 days. The site’s compare chart also shows Flex shells with 2.25 inches of zipper expansion. The Classic packing feature is the interior compression pad.
Dimensions against the airline box
A common U.S. domestic carry-on box is 22 × 14 × 9 inches. Away’s Carry-On at 22 × 14.4 × 9.1 inches is the size the brand aims at most major airlines. The Bigger Carry-On at 22.7 × 15.4 × 9.6 inches is the one aimed at most major U.S. airlines. Check the carrier either way.
Béis’s black Carry-On, 22.83 × 15.70 × 10 inches, is over that box on every side before the extra 2 inches of expansion. The brand’s airline guide says it is built for roomier domestic overheads. The Small Carry-On at 21.50 × 13.50 × 8.07 inches is the tighter roller, at 31 L. An expanded bag is no longer the number on the spec line.
Empty weights sit close on the main carry-ons: Away 7.5 lb, Béis black 7.81 lb, the beige Béis page 8.36 lb. The 9.9 lb medium and 11.33 lb large are the shells an airline may weigh. Béis’s Mini Weekender, 16.14 × 15.75 × 7.87 inches and 32 L, is the personal-item candidate; measure it against the under-seat box on your ticket.
Returns and what the warranty will actually fix
Béis accepts returns and exchanges within 45 days of purchase on most products bought from the Béis site. The item has to be unused, undamaged, with original tags and packaging. Exchanges are free. Returns for store credit are free. A refund to the original payment method is minus a $10 handling fee. If that card is dead, the refund becomes store credit. Shipping fees, and duties and taxes on international orders, are not refunded. Personalized items are final sale. Refunds wait until the warehouse receives and inspects the return, then another 2–3 business days. Defective arrivals can use the Quality Guarantee path inside 45 days. Orders from other retailers follow that retailer’s policy. Free shipping on the U.S. site starts at $140.
The limited lifetime luggage warranty covers listed polycarbonate rollers bought from Béis or an authorized retailer, including the Carry-On, Medium, Large, Small Carry-On, and Mini Roller. Covered failures are shell cracks, wheels and handles that break off, zippers that fail, and fabric tears treated as defects. “Lifetime” means the reasonable life of the materials. Replacement luggage may differ in color or size. Exclusions include commercial use, secondhand pieces, misuse, cosmetic scuffs, and airline handling. Weight-indicator failures are covered for 30 days. Claims go to [email protected] with proof of purchase and photos, and you wait for an approved label.
Away’s return policy is free returns and exchanges on unused items for 100 days. The carry-on page says to test the bag at home before a trip, because a used suitcase is not a return. Personalized items cannot be returned, and they remain under the warranty. Free shipping starts over $100. The site ships to the U.S., the U.K., and Canada.
Suitcases bought on or after April 14, 2026 come with LifetimeCare: repair support for the life of the case, covering functional damage from defects or rough travel, including airline mishandling after you file with the airline. The first five years of repairs are complimentary, with one replacement if a covered failure cannot be fixed. After five years, repair support and round-trip shipping continue, and a service fee can apply once Away confirms it. LifetimeCare Pro, added at checkout, extends complimentary repairs to 10 years and allows up to two replacements. Suitcases bought before April 14, 2026 stay on the earlier limited lifetime warranty. A flown Béis shell is outside both the unused-return rule and the airline-handling exclusion.
Questions
- Béis Carry-On Roller vs Away Carry-On
- Away’s Carry-On is the smaller shell: 22 × 14.4 × 9.1 inches, 7.5 lb, 41 L, $275, with interior compression and a 100-day unused return. Béis’s black Carry-On Roller is the larger, more equipped shell: about 22.83 × 15.70 × 10 inches, 7.81 lb, 49 L before a 2-inch expansion to 61 L, $268, with a weight indicator, TSA lock, and bag hook, and a 45-day unused return minus $10 if you want cash back. If the gate uses a strict 22 × 14 × 9 box, start with Away’s Carry-On or Béis’s Small Carry-On, not the standard Béis carry-on.
- Does either warranty cover airline damage?
- Away’s LifetimeCare, for suitcases bought on or after April 14, 2026, covers functional damage from airline mishandling after you try the airline’s claim, with complimentary repair for five years and one replacement if it cannot be fixed. Béis’s limited lifetime luggage warranty lists transport and airline handling as exclusions, and it limits weight-indicator claims to 30 days. Cosmetic scuffs are outside both programs.
- Which brand is the set, and which is the single suitcase?
- Béis is built as a set: rollers, a Mini Weekender with a 16-inch sleeve, and a Hybrid line that couples together. Away is built as a nesting shell family, with The Carry-On inside the larger cases and a separate bag line that shares the trolley.
