Cotopaxi vs Topo Designs is a pack-shape decision. Cotopaxi builds suitcase-style adventure packs: the Allpa 35L on cotopaxi.com is a 22 × 12 × 10 inch carry-on with a full-wrap zipper, a 15-inch laptop sleeve, and a Del Día option sewn from leftover fabric so each pack’s colors differ. Topo Designs builds city daypacks with a cinch or panel opening and a color-blocked recycled-nylon shell; the Rover Pack Classic on topodesigns.com is 20 L, 11 × 17 × 4.5 inches, and about 24 ounces, with a sleeve for most 16-inch laptops. Choose Cotopaxi when the trip is clothes in a clamshell and the bag has to ride a roller handle. Choose Topo when the bag is a daily commute that sometimes takes a weekend train. StoreAtlas files both as stores on the outdoor hub and the travel tag. This note is not a Best of ranking.
Aer vs Peak Design and Peak Design vs Away cover structured travel packs and rollers. This note stays on Cotopaxi’s adventure line and Topo’s day-and-travel line. Read the spec block the way a Shopify product page is meant to be read, and check the return geography in returns before you buy before the colorway sells out.
This pair sits beside the pack notes already on the camera travel carry job page with Peak Design and neighbors already in the directory. Those are other files, not a ranking. The same files also live in the store directory and on the jobs index.
Topo Designs vs Cotopaxi · Who each storefront fits
Cotopaxi fits the traveler who wants the main compartment to open like a suitcase. The current Allpa 35L page lists a suitcase-style full-wrap zipper, a roller pass-through, air-mesh shoulder straps, a stretch water-bottle pocket, and a water-resistant TPU-coated shell with a PFAS-free C0 DWR finish and PU backing. Shell fabrics are described as 100% recycled. The page lists the pack at $230, 35 L, 22 × 12 × 10 inches, and 2 lb 15 oz, with a 15-inch padded laptop and tablet sleeve. The same page labels trip length as 3–5 days and also describes the pack for week-long adventures. Treat those two lines as marketing ranges. Pack the actual load and weigh it.
The Allpa 28L page lists $205, 19 × 12 × 9 inches, and 2 lb 8 oz. Cotopaxi calls it a personal item and also “carry-on compatible,” aimed at weekend and urban trips, with a padded laptop sleeve and the same clamshell opening. The Allpa Mini 20L is $145, 17 × 10 × 8 inches, and 1 lb 6 oz, with an internal tablet sleeve and a water-bottle pocket up to 0.75 L. The Allpa 42L is $255, 22 × 14 × 11 inches, and 3 lb 2 oz, with a 15-inch sleeve and a removable waist belt. Cotopaxi marks the 42L “carry on (most airlines)” and “7+ days.” That depth is where budget-airline sizers get strict. Del Día versions of the 35L use the same feature list and the same $230 price, with the page stating high-quality remnant fabric so colors are one of a kind. The Del Día 35L weight line reads 2 lb 7 oz, lighter than the solid-color 35L’s 2 lb 15 oz. Read the colorway you are buying.
Topo’s Rover Pack Classic is the cinch-top daypack: flap and buckles, a sleeve for most 16-inch laptops, 1000D recycled nylon, 11 × 17 × 4.5 inches, 20 L, 24 ounces, $99 in black, made in Vietnam. The Daypack Classic is the panel loader: $109, 13 × 19 × 8 inches, also 20 L, a sleeve for most 15-inch laptops, 1000D Cordura, made in the USA, from 23.04 ounces. Topo’s FAQ splits them as heritage cinch-top versus a more urban panel loader.
When the trip outgrows a daypack, Topo’s Global line is the travel step. The Global Travel Bag 30L lists at $219, 12.5 × 20 × 7 inches, 30 L expanding to 35 L when fully packed, a sleeve for most 15-inch laptops, and stowable backpack straps. The Global Travel Backpack is $189, 18.75 × 12.5 × 7.75 inches, 25 L expanding to 27 L, 38.8 ounces, with an external sleeve for most 16-inch laptops. The Rover Pack Tech is the commuter upgrade at $149: 17 × 11 × 5 inches, 24.3 L, an external 15-inch sleeve plus an internal 16-inch sleeve.
Volume, laptop access, and the airline sizer
An Allpa 35L at 22 × 12 × 10 inches is a tall overhead bag, over a common 22 × 14 × 9 box on depth. The 28L at 19 × 12 × 9 inches is the size Cotopaxi labels a personal item, and a 19-inch height still misses some 18-inch under-seat boxes. Screenshot the spec table and the airline chart together.
Topo’s Rover at 17 × 11 × 4.5 inches is the bag that actually behaves like a personal item. The Daypack at 19 inches tall is the one to measure against the sizer, because height is the dimension gate agents notice first. The Global Travel Backpack at 18.75 × 12.5 × 7.75 inches is Topo’s under-seat travel shape; the 30L Global at 20 inches tall is an overhead bag. Topo’s FAQ says smaller packs such as the Rover typically qualify as personal items and larger travel bags are sized for overhead bins, and that airline rules vary.
Allpa’s 15-inch sleeve sits inside the clamshell. Rover’s sleeve is under the cinch. Rover Tech and the Global Travel Backpack put a sleeve on the outside. A 24-ounce Rover and a 2 lb 15 oz Allpa 35L are different loads. Cotopaxi offers waistbelt extenders at no charge by email. For a week of clothes, compare the Allpa 35L or 42L with Topo’s 30L Global. For a laptop and a layer, the Rover or Daypack is the bag.
Warranties, shipping, and the return fee
Cotopaxi’s returns page accepts returns or exchanges within 60 days of purchase on new products, with tags intact, unwashed, and in excellent condition, and an order number required. A $6 return shipping fee is deducted from the refund. Purchases from cotopaxi.com can also be returned at a Cotopaxi retail store, which avoids that fee if you bring the order confirmation or receipt. International and U.S. territory orders are still inside the 60-day window, and the customer pays return shipping. Final-sale items and event tickets are ineligible. The product pages pair that window with Guaranteed for Good: repair, replace, or a resale path when the gear has a problem. That is a defect-and-durability promise. A pack that is the wrong volume is a return, and the return has a fee and a condition standard.
Shipping on cotopaxi.com is free economy at $99 or more before tax inside the continental U.S. International addresses, U.S. territories, P.O. boxes, APO/FPO, and freight forwarders are excluded. Orders leave Salt Lake City after about 1–2 processing days, with standard transit listed at 2–6 business days.
Topo’s returns page is a 30-day window for items that are unused, unwashed, unaltered, and free of pet hair. U.S. refunds carry a flat $9 fee unless rewards status waives it. U.S. size and color exchanges are free. International orders, orders past 30 days, final-sale items, and personalized items are outside the standard policy, and duties are not refunded. EU customers have a 14-day withdrawal right and pay return shipping. The warranty on packs and bags is a lifetime defect warranty. Neglect, accidents, and normal wear are out. Repairs average 6–8 weeks. Free U.S. shipping starts at $100, with most orders out in 1–3 business days.
A used Allpa from a trip is outside “excellent condition.” A Rover with pet hair is outside Topo’s condition list. Measure the exterior, confirm the laptop sleeve on that colorway, and read whether the color is marked final sale before you treat either lifetime promise as a fit guarantee.
Questions
- Cotopaxi Allpa vs Topo Rover for a carry-on trip
- The Allpa 35L is the carry-on: 22 × 12 × 10 inches, about 2 lb 15 oz in the solid-color build, a clamshell, a 15-inch sleeve, and a roller pass-through, listed at $230. The Rover Pack Classic is the daypack: 20 L, 11 × 17 × 4.5 inches, 24 ounces, a 16-inch internal sleeve, listed at $99 in black. For a week of clothes, compare the Allpa with Topo’s Global Travel Bag 30L (12.5 × 20 × 7 inches, expandable toward 35 L, $219) rather than with the Rover. For a city day and a laptop, the Rover is the smaller, lighter tool.
- Is Del Día the same pack as a solid-color Allpa?
- Cotopaxi describes Del Día as the same features and function, sewn from remnant fabric so the colorway is not the photo. The Del Día 35L page lists the same 22 × 12 × 10 inch footprint and a lighter published weight, 2 lb 7 oz. If you need a specific color for a set of bags, buy the solid colorway. If you want the leftover-fabric build, accept that the pack in the box will not match the hero image.
- Which return window is easier if the pack is the wrong size?
- Cotopaxi gives 60 days and deducts $6, with a store option that drops the fee. Topo gives 30 days, free U.S. exchanges, and a $9 U.S. return fee on a standard refund. Both require the bag to come back unused. International Cotopaxi buyers pay return freight inside 60 days. International Topo orders are outside the standard return policy, with a separate EU withdrawal path. How to read the product page and the returns checklist are the next reads if the bag is crossing a border.
