AliExpress vs Temu for shoppers buying from China-facing platforms
Updated
StoreAtlas editors

AliExpress vs Temu is a job split, not a score. AliExpress is Alibaba Group's export marketplace: many independent sellers, a deep catalog of named parts, and a buyer-protection clock that official pages date from receipt. Temu is a centralized, app-first value mall: one cart, one photo language, and a return window the official US policy dates from purchase. StoreAtlas files both as platforms, not as stores and not as a ranking. Confirm the live policy on aliexpress.com and temu.com the day you pay. This note is for shoppers outside China buying on China-facing hosts. It is not a coupon page and not a Best of China apps list.
For video checkout as a third channel, start on cheap and good from China. This page stays on the pairwise job.
Who is this for (and who is it not)?
You are in the right place if you live in the US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, or Southeast Asia and you are choosing between two China-rooted malls for a low-stakes object — a cable, a hobby part, a generic organizer. You are not the reader if you wanted a brand warranty, a shade system, or proof a logo is real. Those jobs belong on an official storefront, the kind StoreAtlas files at /s/{slug}. You are also not the reader if you are a seller hunting GMV playbooks.
StoreAtlas will not invent a landed-cost table, a tariff percentage, or a winner. US de minimis treatment for low-value China-origin parcels changed in 2025. Read the checkout's duty line on the host you will actually pay.
What kind of room is each platform?
AliExpress is a marketplace of sellers. The same product photo can sit on two very different listings. Price, quality, and the return badge vary by seller. That is why the useful habit is reading the seller and the listing badge — Choice, Free Return — before you treat a thumbnail as the object. Official buyer protection lives on AliExpress Buyer Protection: items not as described, damaged, or short-shipped are framed as claims within 15 days of receiving the item; non-arrival is framed against the guaranteed delivery window on the order page. Change-of-mind returns, the same page says, put return shipping on the buyer unless a Free Return path applies. EU statutory rights sit on top of that and are not something this directory will paraphrase as a coupon.
Temu is one storefront with one customer-service desk. The official Return and Refund Policy (last updated 28 April 2026 on the page we opened) lets eligible items return within 90 days from the date of purchase, with the first return of an order free inside that window. Subsequent returns from the same order may deduct a published shipping fee. Electronics windows vary by seller — 45, 60, or 90 days — so the product page is the contract, not a blog table. The clock starts at purchase, not delivery. A slow parcel eats the window. Refunds may go to the original payment method or Temu credit; credit is faster and typically not reversible. Confirm those lines on temu.com the day you pay.

When does AliExpress fit the shopping job?
AliExpress fits when you can name the part. Hobby connectors, camera cages, replacement batteries for a tool you already own, a Chinese electronics brand that Temu's curated grid does not carry — that is catalog depth. The work is on you: seller history, recent photo reviews, and whether the listing is a standard seller tile or a Choice / Free Return badge. Choice is platform-managed logistics, often from regional stock. It buys a faster promise and, in participating countries, a local return label. It does not buy a brand warranty.
It does not fit a shopper who will not open a seller page, or who needs a 90-day change-of-mind window dated from purchase. It does not fit a logo at a fraction of retail. That is a replica risk. The real brand homepage, if we file it, lives under /s/{slug} — not inside the mall.
Confirm receipt only after you inspect the item. On AliExpress, confirming receipt starts the post-receipt clock. Official terms change. Open the protection page the day you buy, not this paragraph.
When does Temu fit the shopping job?
Temu fits generic, low-stakes objects where the first free return matters more than a spec sheet: organizers, party supplies, housewares you will not mind sending back. One cart and one desk are the product. The 90-day purchase-dated window is generous on paper if the parcel is fast. If the parcel is slow, the same window is shorter than it looks.
It does not fit authenticity. A branded tile on Temu is a warning, not a bargain. It does not fit chargers, baby products, leave-on cosmetics, or a battery you cannot afford to distrust. The European Commission published a Digital Services Act decision on Temu in May 2026 after mystery shopping of selected chargers and baby toys. That finding is scoped to tested samples, not a percentage of the whole catalog. The practical rule is still categorical: those objects do not belong on a bargain hunt, on any mall.
It also does not fit a shopper who needs a named SKU with a materials line. Peak Design merchandises liters. Brooklinen merchandises sets. Mejuri merchandises metal. Those are rooms.
How should you read the return clock?
Ask three questions on the host you will pay.
Whose account holds the order? On both platforms the operator holds payment and publishes a baseline policy. The object still came from a seller or a warehouse you will not visit.
When does the clock start? AliExpress buyer protection for not-as-described claims is written from receipt. Temu's standard window is written from purchase. That single difference can halve a usable return if the parcel sits in customs.
Who pays return postage on your reason? Defect and change of mind are priced differently. AliExpress says change of mind is on the buyer unless Free Return applies. Temu says the first return of an order is free inside the window, with exceptions for worn clothing, groceries, some health items, and some electronics. Second returns from the same order may carry a fee. We will not invent your fee. Read the live policy.
Duties are part of the price. If checkout is silent on landed cost, you do not have a price. How to hunt a table on a brand site — a different object — is How to check shipping and returns on a Shopify store.
When should you leave both malls for a brand storefront?
Leave when the object needs to be specified: fiber, shade, alloy, warranty, or proof it is real. A Temu shoe listing will not tell you the wool story; Allbirds leads with it. A marketplace bottle hides the percentage; The Ordinary prints one. Fine jewelry is the sharp case — do not mall-hunt a "14k" tile; Mejuri is filed at its catalog slug.
Official stores still require the method notes: how to evaluate a Shopify store and how to read a Shopify product page. Some brands do not ship to you. A marketplace may then be the only legal path, with eyes open. That is logistics, not a quality win.

Questions
Is AliExpress the same kind of thing as Temu? Both are China-facing marketplaces StoreAtlas files as platforms. They are not the same room. AliExpress is many sellers and a deep catalog. Temu is one cart and a purchase-dated first-return machine. Confirm each policy on the official host.
Does StoreAtlas rank AliExpress vs Temu? No. We do not publish star scores, discount badges, or a Best of China apps list. Each /platforms file describes who a channel is for. This note is the pairwise method.
Which return clock should I trust? The one on the page you pay. AliExpress buyer protection for damaged or not-as-described items is written as 15 days from receipt on the official protection page we opened. Temu's US policy is written as 90 days from purchase for eligible items, with electronics and exceptions on the product page. Those numbers move. Re-read the host.
When do I open a brand store instead? When you need a spec, a warranty, or authenticity. Start on stores or the China-channel method note. A $4 cable can stay on a mall. Skin-contact formula and stamped gold should not.
Cheap from China is easy to find. Knowing which door holds the order is the skill. Confirm the clock on the host you will actually pay, the day you pay.
