Shopify Markets vs Global-e vs Zonos: who each fits
Updated
StoreAtlas editors

Shopify Markets vs Global-e vs Zonos is a three-job compare, not a scoreboard. Shopify Markets is the native multi-market layer: languages, domains, and localized rooms on the Shopify admin you already pay. Global-e is an enterprise international operator — duty-inclusive checkout, local payments, and often merchant-of-record work that Shopify's Managed Markets pages also name. Zonos is a landed-cost layer: duties at checkout, HS codes, and (on some plans) remittance while you stay merchant of record. StoreAtlas files all three as tools, not as a ranking. Confirm coverage on shopify.com/markets, global-e.com, and zonos.com the day you open the account.
This note is not a Best of cross-border apps list. It does not invent a winner, a fee, or a star rating.
Who is this for (and who is it not)?
You are in the right place if you run a Shopify storefront and you are choosing who should localize the room, who should hold the international order, and who should print the duty line. You are not the reader if you wanted a shopper coupon page, a carrier homepage, or a scoreboard of "best Shopify international apps."
We will not invent a market-count trophy or a rate. Official marketing pages publish large destination numbers. Those figures move. Read the host you will actually pay.
Who fits each tool — and who does not?
| Job | Shopify Markets | Global-e | Zonos |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official site | shopify.com/markets | global-e.com | zonos.com |
| What it is | Native multi-market layer on Shopify | Enterprise international checkout and operations | Landed-cost, HS classification, and duty collection |
| Who it fits | Shopify brands expanding country rooms on the platform they already pay | Brands that want an operator for duties, local payments, and often merchant-of-record | Teams that want a duty line at checkout and to stay merchant of record |
| Who it does not fit | A non-Shopify stack that expected a third-party plugin | A hobby shop that only ships domestic | A domestic-only checkout with no HS-code job |
| Confirm on the official host | Markets versus Managed Markets, domains, duties settings | Coverage, integration scope, who is merchant of record | Calculator, HS-code quality, plan and remittance |
A native market layer, an international operator, and a landed-cost engine can share a country list and still be different rooms. Mixing them is how a merchant buys a localization switcher when they needed a merchant of record, or a full operator when they only needed a duty quote.
When is Shopify Markets the right object?
Shopify Markets is the platform-native multi-market product on shopify.com/markets. The page we opened describes markets you create from one store: languages and currencies, unique domains or subfolders, catalog and pricing per market, and a "view as" preview. It is the room-builder, not a third-party login.
It fits a Shopify brand that wants country sites, languages, and catalogs without standing up a separate vendor for the storefront itself. It fits an operator who will still open the official Markets docs the day they turn a market on.
It does not fit a non-Shopify stack. It does not fit a merchant who needed Global-e or Zonos as the whole product and expected Markets to be a merchant-of-record desk. Shopify also publishes Managed Markets: a different object. Official Help pages we could open name Global-e as merchant of record for duties, tax remittance, commercial invoices, and carrier arrangements on that program. Confirm which Markets product you are buying on shopify.com — not on this paragraph.
Pricing and duty settings live on Shopify. We will not paste a plan table. Related files are Global-e and Zonos — other listings, not a podium.
When is Global-e the right object?
Global-e merchandizes an end-to-end international layer on global-e.com: a localized journey, duties and payments, and operations they describe as handling global trading for you. Official Shopify Help for Managed Markets names Global-e as merchant of record for parts of those orders.
It fits a brand scaling international DTC that wants an operator to hold compliance, local payment methods, and duty-inclusive checkout. It fits a team that will treat the sales conversation as part of the product — the directory already notes the motion is often enterprise.
It does not fit a hobby shop that only ships domestic. It does not fit a team that only needed a duty calculator and wanted to keep merchant of record and their own carriers as the whole product — that job sits closer to Zonos, confirmed on zonos.com. It does not fit anyone treating this directory page as a second login.
Confirm coverage, who is merchant of record, and integration scope on global-e.com the day you subscribe. Shopify merchants should also ask whether they are buying Global-e through Managed Markets or as a direct contract.
When is Zonos the right object?
Zonos merchandizes landed cost, HS classification, and checkout duty collection on zonos.com. Official docs for Shopify live at zonos.com/docs/global-ecommerce/shopify. The homepage we opened pitches duty calculations, tariff classifications, and connecting your own carriers.
It fits a brand that wants the duty line in the cart so the shopper is not surprised at the door. It fits a team that will keep merchant of record and will still maintain HS codes and product data — the directory already says data quality changes the number.
It does not fit a domestic-only checkout. It does not fit a merchant who wanted Global-e's operator model as the whole product and did not want to own classification. It does not fit anyone treating this directory page as a live calculator.
Official pages publish country counts and guarantee language. Those are the vendor's numbers. StoreAtlas will not turn them into stars. Open zonos.com the day you subscribe.
How do you choose without a score?
Name the job in one sentence before you open a pricing page.
If the sentence is "I need country rooms, languages, and domains on Shopify," start on Shopify Markets and confirm Markets versus Managed Markets on shopify.com.
If the sentence is "I want an operator to run international checkout, local payments, and often merchant of record," start on Global-e and confirm scope on global-e.com. If you arrived via Shopify admin, confirm whether that path is Managed Markets.
If the sentence is "I want a duty and tax line at checkout and I will stay merchant of record," start on Zonos and confirm the calculator and HS-code job on zonos.com.
If the sentence is "I need a tax engine for nexus, not a cross-border operator," that is closer to Avalara — another listing, not a rank.
A shopper-facing shipping table is a different object. How to check shipping and returns on a Shopify store is the pre-cart habit for rooms. Away merchandises a warranty locale. Brooklinen merchandises a US-leaning bundle whose ship-to is part of the product. Those files show why destination is a contract, not which app a brand uses.
Cross-border software is not a store. If you landed here looking for a brand homepage, start on stores or stores vs tools vs platforms vs notes. Tools are utilities beside a storefront. Notes explain the job. They do not rank the shelf.
