How to estimate landed cost on brand storefronts (shipping + duties)

Landed cost is product plus shipping plus duties and taxes shown for your destination — not the hero price. Hunt the duty line on the official locale checkout; if checkout is silent, you do not have a price yet. StoreAtlas will not invent a tariff percentage. Open the country picker, read DDP (duties in the rate) versus DAP (duties at the door), then treat the checkout duty line as the only live figure. This is a pre-cart habit on the dtc tag, not a Best of list. Pair it with how to check shipping and returns and how to verify a storefront ships to your country. Confirm the line the day you buy.
What counts as landed cost on a brand site?
Four lines, not one thumbnail. The tile price is merchandising until shipping, duty, and fee sit next to it.
Merchandise. The SKU price on the locale you selected. A USD homepage is not the EUR or GBP catalog. Membership and threshold splits change the tile — Thrive Market states a club door as merchandising. If the guest number only appears at pay, you were shopping a catalog the first screen did not show.
Outbound shipping. The table or postcode tool for your country. “Free international shipping” is not a landed-cost sentence. It often means the merchant waived their label and left duty for the door.
Duty and import tax. Named at checkout, named as DDP in the shipping table, or silent. Silent is a cost you do not have yet. HS codes and product data change the number. We will not invent a percentage.
Broker, COD, or payment fees. A carrier may collect a disbursement fee on DAP. A payment method may add a conversion line. If checkout is silent, assume the door can still ask.
A brand room and a mall are different objects. Shopify storefront vs Amazon is that split. This page stays on owned storefronts.
Where do storefronts hide the duty line?
Common doors: a footer shipping link, a locale or country switcher, a tab on the product page, a banner that only appears after a postcode. None of those are automatically dishonest. The failure is a first screen that implies the world ships at the tile price.
Open the official host in the address bar. The official storefront versus lookalike note is the domain check. Then switch the locale to the country you will use. Language and ship-to are not the same control on many Shopify themes.
Away merchandises a warranty locale. July and Monos split regional luggage rooms. Brooklinen merchandises a set whose ship-to is part of the product. Those files show destination as a contract. They do not publish your duty.
A dated sample of whether the shipping door even showed up in first HTML lives on how often Shopify storefronts put shipping and returns where you can find them. Findability is one check. The number is another.
Merchant tools that print a duty line are a different shelf. Zonos is a landed-cost engine. Shopify Markets is the native country-room layer. Global-e is an international operator, often merchant of record. The pairwise note is Shopify Markets vs Global-e vs Zonos. Those pages are for operators. As a shopper you still read the checkout in front of you, not a vendor homepage.
How do you estimate without inventing a rate?
Write the four lines before you treat a sale tile as cheap.
| What you see on the official locale | What it usually means | What you still confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Checkout shows tax and duty next to shipping | Often DDP — duties in the pay total | The destination country matches the picker |
| Shipping table says duties and taxes included | Merchant or operator is collecting up front | The SKU is not excluded (final sale, freight, food) |
| Shipping table is silent; checkout is silent | Treat as DAP until proven otherwise | A carrier can invoice at the door |
| Banner says free international shipping | Outbound label may be free; duty may not | The shipping page, not the hero |
| Country missing from the locale picker | No direct lane on this host | A forwarder is a different object, not a brand promise |
Then do the arithmetic you can defend.
- Take the locale price, not a converted homepage. - Add the shipping row the table shows for your country or postcode. - If checkout prints duty, add that line. If it does not, you do not have a landed cost — you have a guess. - Add any named broker or conversion fee. - Compare that sum to a mall tile only after you have read the mall’s own duty sentence.
US de minimis treatment for low-value China-origin parcels changed in 2025. EU and UK VAT rules are not this paragraph. StoreAtlas will not paste a customs table that moves. If you needed the China-locale path, use how to check whether a brand storefront ships to your locale.
A public paste is not a duty calculator. 17TRACK is for a tracking number after the label exists. Do not use a tracker to invent a tariff.
When is checkout the only number that counts?
Only the checkout on the locale you will pay is a live number. A US homepage, an ad screenshot, and a duties widget on another country are merchandising.
The shipping table is orientation. Checkout is the contract you are about to accept.
A table can say “duties calculated at checkout” and then print nothing. A table can say “you may pay duties” and then include them. Believe the pay total on the locale you selected, with your address entered far enough to refresh shipping — you do not have to submit the card.
If the total jumps when you enter the country, that jump is information. If it does not jump and the table was silent, you may still meet a carrier invoice. That is DAP, not a broken theme.
Casper and other freight objects make delivery the product as much as foam. A mattress is not a tee-rate parcel. Peak Design merchandises liters and compatibility. Those rooms still send you to the official haul language. We will not invent a night count or a duty.
If you cannot complete the address because the country is absent, stop. That is how to verify a storefront ships to your country, not a coupon problem.
What if the checkout is silent?
A silent checkout is a stop sign for comparison shopping, not a bargain.
- Do not copy a rate from a Reddit thread or a year-old screenshot. - Do not treat “HS code” content on a blog as your classification. - Do not assume a beauty kit on a .com homepage ships as the hero still. Glossier is a kit room; the locale decides the lane. - Do not mall-hunt a “same” photo and call the difference landed cost. Same product: brand site vs Temu / AliExpress is that job.
If you still want the object, write one sentence you can live with: “I will pay the tile plus shipping, and I accept an unknown door invoice,” or “I will not buy until checkout names duty.” Both are honest. Mixing them is how a sale tile becomes an expensive parcel.
Returns are a second landed-cost problem. An international return can erase the outbound “deal.” Read what to check on returns before you buy DTC on the same pass.

What is DDP vs DAP in shopper language?
DDP means the brand (or its operator) collects duties at checkout so the pay total is closer to the door price. DAP means the listed total can still meet a carrier bill later. One paragraph is enough: read the duty line, or treat the total as incomplete. Zonos and Global-e are utilities some brands use — we file them under tools and cross-border tools; we do not operate them for you. The pairwise operator note is Shopify Markets vs Global-e vs Zonos.
A post-order “customs fee” page off the brand domain is a different object. See how to spot fake customs-fee scams.
What is the pre-pay checklist?
Reuse this list on the official locale you will pay.
- Open the official locale you will pay (not a .com mirror for another country). - Add the real SKU and destination to cart. - Read the shipping method line and any duty or tax line before paying. - Note whether duties are collected at checkout (DDP-style) or left for delivery (DAP-style). - If no duty line appears, treat the listed total as incomplete. - Do not trust a blog table — including ours — over the live checkout.
Away, Peak Design, and Brooklinen show destination as part of the product. They do not publish your duty. If the object is a bag or a sheet set, the matching jobs are camera travel carry and bedding you can compare. More method notes live on the method hub. An international return can erase the outbound “deal” — read returns before you buy on the same pass.

Questions
- Does StoreAtlas publish a duty percentage table?
- No. Duty depends on category, origin, and destination. Read the checkout line on the host you will pay. We do not invent a tariff, a star score, or a Best of list.
- Is a lower hero price cheaper once duties land?
- Not necessarily. Compare totals only after shipping and duties appear for your address.
- What tools do brands use for duties?
- Some use utilities like [Zonos](/tools/zonos) or [Global-e](/tools/global-e). We file those under /tools; we do not operate them for you.
- What if checkout never shows duties?
- You do not have a landed price yet. Confirm [ship-to](/blog/verify-store-ships-to-your-country) and ask support, or expect a carrier bill later.
- Is free international shipping the same as DDP?
- No. Free outbound shipping can still leave duty for the door. Read the shipping table for duties-included language, then believe checkout.
