What to check on returns before you buy DTC / cross-border

Write down return window start, who pays postage, and exceptions before the cart. Separately: a real duty line at checkout is not a scam; a random post-order customs payment page off the brand domain often is. Pair this note with how to spot fake customs-fee scams. A long window you cannot find is not a longer window. A US returns page is not the contract for a parcel leaving another country. StoreAtlas will not invent a rate or a prepaid label. This note is not a Best of returns list. Confirm the live rule the day you buy on the dtc tag.

Where should you read the return rule?
On the official locale you will pay, before the cart is a trophy.
Footer “Returns”, a combined shipping-and-returns page, a PDP tab, and a “Start a return” portal are the usual doors. A banner that only says “Easy returns” is merchandising until it points at a dated window and a postage sentence.
Open the host in the address bar. The official storefront versus lookalike note is the domain check. Then switch country. Locale switchers change the story. Away merchandises a warranty locale. July splits regional luggage rooms. Brooklinen merchandises a set whose ship-to is part of the product. Those files show destination as a contract. They do not print your label.
A dated sample of whether the returns door showed up in first HTML lives on how often Shopify storefronts put shipping and returns where you can find them. A present link does not prove the rule is kind. A missing homepage link does not prove there is no policy. Confirm on the official host.
Intimate, food, and freight objects often carry a stricter rule than a tee. Mejuri is a stack shop, not a costume wall — still read metal and returns on mejuri.com. Glossier is a kit room; opened cosmetics are a different object from an unopened set. Casper makes trial and haul language the product as much as foam.
What changes on a cross-border return?
Four lines move when the parcel crossed a border.
| Check | What “good enough to decide” looks like | What is not a decision |
|---|---|---|
| Window | A dated number on this locale (30 days from delivery, 30 from purchase — read which) | A homepage “hassle-free” tile |
| Who pays postage | Buyer, merchant, or “label provided on eligible items” | An influencer unboxing |
| Final sale / hygiene | Named SKUs or categories (underwear, earwear, food, sale) | A footer that never mentions them |
| International path | Whether they accept a return from your country, and to which address | A US-only warehouse paragraph you assumed was global |
| Refund timing | Original method versus store credit, and when the clock starts | A chat promise |
Change of mind and defect are priced differently on most official pages. A branded portal can still charge you for the label on a change-of-mind international return. We will not invent your postage.
If checkout never accepted your country, you do not have a return path on this host. That is how to verify a storefront ships to your country. A package forwarder is a different object: the brand’s return window may not cover a US locker you rented.
Landed cost on the way in can erase the “deal” on the way out. Duties you paid on DAP are often not refunded by the brand. Read how to estimate landed cost on the same pass.
How do branded portals change the shopper job?
After you pay, many Shopify and DTC rooms send you to a branded “start a return” page. AfterShip and Narvar are the two portal files in this directory. From a shopper’s view they are a form: order number, email, reason, refund or exchange.
A portal is not the window. The window still lives on the storefront locale. The portal is the door you walk through after the order. Shopify returns apps from a shopper’s view is that room. The merchant job map is how Shopify returns apps differ.
Route sold at checkout is package protection, not a longer return window. Protection claims and change-of-mind returns are different products. Confirm the policy you bought on route.com — we do not operate that account.
If you only have a tracking number and no brand page, you are not starting a return yet. 17TRACK is a public paste for the parcel. StoreAtlas embeds that official widget on order tracking. We do not keep the number.
What is not a longer window?
A number you cannot find. A US page you are not paying on. A portal that opens only after you invent an order ID you do not have. A “final sale” checkbox that appears at pay.
We do not score return generosity. We notice whether the rule is findable. That sentence already lives on the shipping and returns method. This page adds the cross-border pass.
What should you check before the cart?
Reuse this list on the official locale.
- Domain matches the brand you meant — not a lookalike. - Country picker is the country you will use. - Return window is dated, and you know whether it starts at purchase or delivery. - Postage sentence exists for your reason (change of mind versus defect). - Final-sale and hygiene lines are visible before pay, not only in a checkbox. - International returns are named if the warehouse is not in your country. - If a portal is mentioned, you still treat the storefront page as the contract. - If the tile looks cheap next to a mall photo, you are not comparing returns yet — same product: brand site vs Temu / AliExpress is that split.
Then open the official PDP for the SKU. Confirm the day you buy. Pair the homepage habit with how to evaluate a Shopify store.
If you landed here looking for a brand homepage, start on stores or stores vs tools vs platforms vs notes. Notes explain the job. They do not rank the shelf.

How do duties and returns interact?
A DDP duty line on the official host is part of the price you accepted. A DAP door invoice is a different bill. Neither is a reason to pay a stranger’s “customs” page. The sibling note is how to spot fake customs-fee scams. Duties you paid on DAP are often not refunded by the brand when you refuse the parcel. Read how to estimate landed cost on the same pass. Zonos may have printed the checkout line; it does not decide the return.
What three return facts should you write down?
Reuse this list on the official locale. Screenshot the page.
- Find the returns URL on the official host for your locale. - Note window start (purchase versus delivery versus receipt). - Note who pays return postage for change-of-mind versus defect. - Note hygiene or final-sale exceptions for your SKU. - At checkout: if duties appear on the brand domain, treat them as part of price. - After the order: never pay “customs” on an unfamiliar domain — open the brand order page or named carrier.
Away, Brooklinen, and Béis still send you to the locale table. AfterShip, Narvar, and 17TRACK change the post-order job; they do not rewrite the window. Pair AfterShip Returns vs Narvar and Shopify returns apps for shoppers. Jobs that care about the label: camera travel carry and bedding you can compare. Hubs: method, shipping and tracking tools, cross-border tools.

Questions
- What should I check on returns before I buy DTC?
- The window start, who pays return postage, final-sale or hygiene exceptions, and whether an international return is offered — on the locale you will actually pay.
- Is a duty line at brand checkout a scam?
- Usually not — that is often DDP collection. Confirm it sits on the official host before you pay. Pair this note with the [customs-fee scam sibling](/blog/customs-fee-scam-dtc-checkout).
- Does a longer return window always help cross-border?
- Only if you can use it. Postage, duties on refusal, and clock start matter more than the headline days.
- Is a branded portal the same as the return window?
- No. AfterShip or Narvar may host the form after the order. The window still lives on the official storefront locale.
