Shopify returns apps differ by the job they take after the order, not by a star score. A branded portal — AfterShip or Narvar — lets the shopper start a return on a page that still looks like the store. A checkout add-on — Route — sells protection next to tracking. A cross-border lane — Passport — is shipping and returns for international orders. Shopify’s own returns tools live on Shopify Help. StoreAtlas files the vendor rooms as tools. Confirm each host the day you subscribe. This note is how the jobs differ — not a Best of returns apps list.

Who is this for (and who is it not)?

You are in the right place if you run a Shopify storefront and you are mixing “start a return,” “protect the parcel,” and “ship the return across a border” as if they were one app. You are not the reader if you wanted a shopper coupon, a Best of list, or a score for how generous a brand’s window is.

The window itself is a storefront contract. How to check shipping and returns on a Shopify store is that habit. A dated sample of whether the door to that table showed up in first HTML lives on how often Shopify storefronts put shipping and returns where you can find them. This page files the apps that sit behind the door.

A portal, a protection add-on, a lane, and a first-party admin tool can share the word “returns” and still be different rooms. Mixing them is how a merchant buys insurance when they needed a “start a return” page, or a full operator when they only needed Shopify’s own return flow.

The pairwise portal note is AfterShip Returns vs Narvar. Loop Returns is a known Shopify app we have not filed. We will not invent that row here.

When is a branded portal the right object?

A portal is the right object when the shopper should start the return without a support ticket, on a URL that still looks like the brand.

AfterShip fits a Shopify or DTC brand that already wanted branded tracking and is asking whether returns is the same vendor. Confirm returns surfaces on aftership.com. Related tracking notes: 17TRACK vs AfterShip and Shopify tracking apps for DTC.

Narvar fits enterprise retail that wants one post-purchase language. Confirm scope on narvar.com. The directory already says smaller stores should read Shopify-native options.

Neither file is a winner. Both send you to the official host the day you subscribe. We will not invent a seat price.

When is package protection the right object?

Route sells package protection and a branded tracking experience as a checkout add-on on route.com. The directory already says it fits merchants who want a protection upsell next to tracking, and that it does not fit teams that only needed a free lookup with no insurance-like product.

It is not a returns portal as the whole product. A shopper who bought protection is not automatically in a branded “start a return” room. Confirm the claims and compliance rules on route.com. Protection products have market-specific policy. Read the official page, not this paragraph.

17TRACK remains the public paste when there is no brand page. Do not buy Route because you needed a paste.

When is a cross-border lane the right object?

Passport sells cross-border shipping and returns for DTC brands that already have international orders. Official host: passportshipping.com. The directory already says it fits US and EU brands shipping abroad often enough to need a dedicated lane partner, and that it does not fit domestic-only labels-only shops.

It is not a branded WISMO page. It is not a checkout protection toggle. Courier coverage depends on lanes. We will not invent a transit day. Confirm the return path on the official host the day you subscribe.

If the sentence is “I need country rooms, duties, or a merchant of record,” you may have left returns apps entirely. Use Shopify Markets vs Global-e vs Zonos.

When is Shopify’s own returns tool the right object?

Shopify publishes first-party returns documentation at Managing returns. Official Help describes processing returns, refunds, and related admin flows. Shopify also publishes merchant-facing returns product pages on shopify.com — confirm the live Help and product page the day you care. We will not paste a plan table.

It fits a merchant starting returns inside the admin they already pay. It fits a team that will still publish a findable returns link on the storefront — the discoverability sample is a separate method note.

It does not fit a team that needed AfterShip’s or Narvar’s branded room as the first day and expected Help to be that suite. It does not fit a shopper. Shoppers read the brand’s official locale, not this directory.

How do you choose without a score?

Write one sentence.

- If the sentence is “I want the shopper to start a return on a page that looks like us,” start on AfterShip or Narvar and use the portal compare. - If the sentence is “I want a protection offer next to tracking at checkout,” start on Route and read the official policy. - If the sentence is “I need a lane partner for international outbound and returns,” start on Passport. - If the sentence is “I want to process returns inside Shopify first,” start on Shopify Help. - If the sentence is “I have a number and no brand page,” you are on a tracker, not a returns app. Use 17TRACK or order tracking.

Then find the window on the official locale you will actually pay. Brooklinen and Away are store files for destination-as-contract, not app trophies. Pair this note with how to evaluate a Shopify store.

If you landed here looking for a brand homepage, start on stores or stores vs tools vs platforms vs notes. Tools are utilities beside a storefront. Notes explain the job. They do not rank the shelf.

StoreAtlas lives at storeatlas.cc. It is not storeatlas.net and not HelloAtlas at helloatlas.io. We do not run AfterShip, Narvar, Route, Passport, or Shopify returns accounts. Visit links go to official hosts.

Questions

Does StoreAtlas rank Shopify returns apps?
No. The note files jobs: a branded portal, an enterprise post-purchase layer, a protection add-on, a cross-border lane, and Shopify’s own returns tools. We do not invent scores or a Best of list.
Where are the official sites?
AfterShip at [aftership.com](https://www.aftership.com). Narvar at [narvar.com](https://www.narvar.com). Route at [route.com](https://route.com). Passport at [passportshipping.com](https://passportshipping.com). Shopify returns help at [help.shopify.com](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/fulfillment/managing-orders/returns). Confirm plans on the host you will actually open.
Is a returns portal the same as package protection?
No. A portal lets the shopper start a return on a branded page. Route sells protection next to tracking as a checkout add-on. Confirm the product you are buying on the official host.
Do you score return generosity?
No. We notice the job of the app. The return window itself lives on the official storefront locale. A long window you cannot find is not a longer window.
